Reports Suggest Possible US-Iran Talks Amid War Entering Fourth Week
The war between the United States, Israel and Iran has entered its fourth week, as reports emerge of potential talks between Washington and Tehran mediated by intermediaries.
An Iranian official confirmed to CBS that messages and proposals from the United States have been received through Turkey, Egypt and Pakistan, and are under review. An informed source told Reuters that the two sides might hold talks soon, possibly this week, in Islamabad.
US President Donald Trump described discussions with Iran as "constructive and effective," stating that the sides have reached key points of agreement. "If this trend continues, it can solve the problem to a large extent," Trump said. He announced a temporary halt to attacks on Iran's energy infrastructure for five days to allow diplomacy.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said any possible agreement could be based on the military achievements of Israel and the US, while preserving Israel's vital interests. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called for an end to the conflicts and a return to the negotiating table.
Iran has rejected any talks with the United States. Tehran residents expressed skepticism, with one saying Trump has not acted in Iran's people's interest and another noting uncertainty in behind-the-scenes politics.
