North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un Pledges Expansion of Nuclear Arsenal and AI Weapons

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un pledged to expand his country's nuclear weapons, intercontinental ballistic missiles and AI-powered attack systems during a military parade on Wednesday, February 25.

According to the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim made the remarks at an event marking the conclusion of the Ninth Congress of the Workers’ Party. He stated that Pyongyang’s international standing has “significantly improved” in recent years and outlined plans to increase both the number of nuclear weapons and their operational capabilities.

Kim emphasized the development of advanced missile systems, artificial intelligence-based strike systems and unmanned drones to counter external threats. Addressing the United States, he said dialogue remains possible if Washington abandons its “hostile policy.” He described relations with South Korea as confrontational, warning that provocations from Seoul could trigger a direct response.

North Korea has conducted multiple missile tests in recent years, including intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of reaching the US mainland. International sanctions remain in place over its nuclear and weapons programs.

Regional tensions have risen amid expanded joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea, which Pyongyang views as rehearsals for invasion. Analysts note that North Korea increasingly emphasizes asymmetric capabilities, including cyber warfare and drone technology.

Kim’s remarks signal continued defiance of international pressure and a commitment to strengthening strategic deterrence amid diplomatic deadlock and economic challenges.
