NASA has released an image of the Cocoon Nebula, a star-forming region in the Milky Way that resembles a heart shape, coinciding with Valentine's Day celebrations.

The image depicts stellar nurseries where young stars emerge from dense clouds of gas and dust. Data from the Chandra X-ray Observatory captured clusters of energetic newborn stars shining through the surrounding clouds in this stellar nursery.

NASA stated that these young stars emit strong X-ray radiation, which aids astronomers in studying star development in dense cosmic environments. The nebula's glow comes from light emitted by the young stars and reflections off nearby dust clouds.

Scientists combined X-ray data with visible-light photographs and infrared observations from the WISE Space Telescope to create the final image. The Cocoon Nebula spans about 15 light-years and is located approximately 2,650 light-years from Earth, marking it as an active region for stellar birth.

The release on February 14 aligns the heart-shaped cosmic structure with global Valentine's Day observances and public interest in space exploration. The image underscores ongoing research into star formation and highlights the universe's aesthetic appeal.
