Islamic Emirate Seeks Inclusion in Regional and Global Forums on Afghanistan
The acting ambassador of the Islamic Emirate in Doha, Sohil Shaheen, has called for the de facto authorities to be included in all regional and international discussions concerning Afghanistan’s interests. Shaheen stated that the administration’s control over the country and its record of providing security justify its participation in diplomatic and multilateral forums.
Shaheen noted that the Islamic Emirate has previously submitted formal requests for membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and the BRICS economic bloc, emphasizing that engagement with the current governing structure is necessary for addressing regional economic and political matters. He reiterated that the authorities are prepared to cooperate on shared challenges provided they are granted a seat at the table.
Political analyst Faridullah Zazi supported the diplomatic push, stating that neighboring and regional states should engage with Afghanistan based on mutual interests rather than viewing the country solely through a security or buffer zone lens. Zazi argued that sustained dialogue is essential for long-term stability and regional integration.
Despite these calls for inclusion, Afghanistan was not represented at a recent meeting of defense ministers from the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. The absence highlights the ongoing diplomatic complexities surrounding the country’s international recognition and participation in multilateral security frameworks.
Officials in Doha have continued to advocate for formal invitations to upcoming conferences, maintaining that excluding the current administration from regional discussions limits the effectiveness of collective efforts to address cross-border issues.
