Fake Social Media Accounts Impersonating Iranian Leaders Post Satirical Content on Seeking Refuge in Afghanistan

A surge of fake social media accounts impersonating senior Iranian officials has emerged, posting satirical content that has garnered significant online attention.

Accounts using the names of figures such as Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Ali Larijani, and the late commander Qasem Soleimani have attracted thousands of followers shortly after creation. One parody post attributed to Khamenei referenced possible escape scenarios during conflict, including seeking refuge in Afghanistan, and drew hundreds of thousands of views along with widespread reactions.

Several such accounts have exchanged humorous messages pretending to be senior officials, increasing engagement and causing confusion among users regarding their authenticity. Iranian outlets have warned that these fake accounts misuse the names and images of officials, particularly after verification badges disappeared from some profiles.

No official comments have been issued by Iranian authorities on the matter. The social platform X permits parody accounts provided they clearly indicate their satirical nature, or they risk suspension for impersonation.

Similar parody accounts have previously targeted global figures, including former U.S. President Donald Trump and X owner Elon Musk, as part of a broader culture of online political satire. Experts note that such accounts continue to influence online political discourse, with users relying more on platform tools to differentiate satire from official information.
