Denmark cooperating with Taliban embassy in Norway on deporting 57 Afghan migrants
The Danish government is working with the Taliban embassy in Norway to deport 57 Afghan citizens whose asylum requests were rejected or who committed crimes, according to the Danish Immigration Service.
Denmark's TV2 network, citing Danish officials, reported that the contact is limited to technical cooperation and does not constitute recognition of the Taliban. Danish authorities emphasized that discussions are restricted to consular matters.
Norway stated it has no role in facilitating this cooperation. Andreas Motsfeldt Kravik, deputy foreign minister of Norway, noted that the Afghan embassy in Oslo also serves Denmark and Iceland but that Norway does not influence their bilateral relations with the embassy.
Kravik did not deny plans for returning Afghan refugees from Norway, saying the matter falls under Norway's Ministry of Justice and Public Security. He added that Norwegian immigration officials assess the human rights situation in Afghanistan and the principle of non-refoulement to unsafe countries.
Germany and Austria have previously contacted the Taliban regarding the deportation of Afghan migrants.
