Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand stated that Ottawa will resume diplomatic relations with Iran only if there is a change of government in the country.

Speaking to media at the Munich Security Conference on February 14, Anand emphasized that Canada will not establish any official relations with Iran absent a "regime change." She added that Canada has imposed new sanctions on seven individuals linked to the Iranian government, with its primary regional focus on Iranian officials' suppression of human rights.

Canada severed diplomatic ties with Iran in 2012, leaving relations at their lowest level since then.

Separately, two U.S. officials told Reuters that the U.S. military is preparing for a potential prolonged, multi-week operation against Iran. Former U.S. President Donald Trump welcomed the prospect of a government change in Iran on Friday.
