The body of the wife of Ali-Shir Mirzanbat, former head of Tajikistan's Gorno-Badakhshan province, was recovered from the Panj River on Afghan soil on 12 Saratan. Taliban border guards located the body and transferred it to Tajik border authorities. Forensic analysis confirmed the identity of the deceased as Mirzanbat's wife.

The vehicle accident took place on 27 Jawza in the Darwaz area. Mirzanbat was traveling from Dushanbe to Khorog with his wife, young daughter, driver and assistant when the car entered the river. The Tajikistan Interior Ministry attributed the crash to excessive speed and loss of control. Some reports from Tajik media suggested the vehicle hit border structures and barbed wire.

Search operations for the body of the young daughter continue. Mirzanbat had held the position of head of Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Province since Aqrib 1400.
