The World Health Organization confirmed two new cases of wild poliovirus in Afghanistan. One case was identified in Nari district of Kunar province and the other in Nahr-e-Saraj district of Helmand province.

Symptoms for the Kunar case began on April 14 while symptoms for the Helmand case began on May 7. The Kunar case was detected through testing of a close contact after the original patient tested negative.

These two cases bring the total number of wild poliovirus cases in Afghanistan to six for 2026. Pakistan has reported three cases during the same period.

Afghanistan and Pakistan remain the only countries with ongoing wild poliovirus transmission. Environmental surveillance recorded 34 positive samples in Afghanistan and 90 positive samples in Pakistan in 2026.

Coordinated vaccination campaigns continue in both countries despite challenges posed by environmental samples and cross-border movements.
