209 Afghan Prisoners Including Women and Children Released from Pakistan's Sindh Prison
Abdul Jabar Takhari, the Taliban consul in Karachi, Pakistan, announced that 209 Afghan prisoners, including women and children, were released on Saturday from a prison in Sindh province and returned to Afghanistan. He stated that the prisoners had been held for various crimes.
Takhari said the release occurred with Taliban cooperation, allowing the prisoners to return home. He added that 105 other Afghan prisoners remain in custody in Sindh prisons and are scheduled to be freed and repatriated within the next two days.
Following the fall of Afghanistan's previous government, large numbers of Afghans migrated to Pakistan. Pakistani police detain Afghans without residency documents and imprison them.
Human rights organizations have repeatedly expressed concern over the situation of Afghan migrants in Pakistan and their arrests by police.
