UNAMA Reports 70 Civilians Killed, 477 Injured in Afghanistan-Pakistan Border Clashes Last Year

The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) released a report on February 8 stating that border clashes between Taliban and Pakistani forces late last year killed 70 civilians and injured 477 others.
According to the report, most civilian casualties occurred between October 10 and 17 during intense fighting along contested border areas in eastern and southern provinces. UNAMA attributed the losses largely to Pakistani military operations, noting that the figures exceeded those from previous years. Communities in these areas faced shelling, displacement, and disruptions to trade and daily life.
The report also detailed a Pakistani airstrike in Kabul in mid-October that killed at least nine civilians and injured dozens more.
Pakistan maintains that armed groups, including the Pakistani Taliban, operate from Afghan territory, justifying its cross-border operations to prevent attacks inside Pakistan.
Diplomatic talks and regional mediation efforts have failed to reduce tensions, with key border crossings remaining closed after repeated clashes. UNAMA urged both sides to prevent civilian harm and resume dialogue, warning of risks to humanitarian conditions and regional stability.
