Afghanistan’s top-tier domestic T20 competition, the Wazir Mohammad Akbar Khan Grade 1 Provincial Tournament, started on Tuesday with matches in Kandahar and Nangarhar provinces, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) announced.

The event runs from Feb. 3 to Feb. 13, coming after the conclusion of the 50-over edition of the same tournament last week, which Nangarhar won.

This marks the first time the Wazir Mohammad Akbar Khan Grade 1 Provincial Tournament has featured both one-day and T20 formats, as part of ACB efforts to bolster the country’s domestic cricket structure.

The ACB’s domestic cricket department said the dual-format setup is designed to spot talented players for advancement to higher levels, including List A cricket, the Mirwais Nika Three-Day Tournament and the National T20 Cup.

Group-stage matches will take place in Kandahar and Nangarhar, before the tournament moves fully to Nangarhar for the semi-finals and final.

The ACB noted that the same players and squads from the one-day provincial tournament are competing in the T20 event, enabling selectors to evaluate performances across both formats within the national talent development pathway.
