Iran defeats Indonesia on penalties to win AFC Futsal Asian Cup 2026

Iran won the AFC Futsal Asian Cup Indonesia 2026 title by defeating host nation Indonesia 5-4 in a penalty shootout after the final ended 5-5 following extra time.
Indonesia took the lead in the third minute through Rio Pangestu. Iran equalized via Hossein Tayebibidgoli. The hosts then led 4-1 with goals from Reza Gunawan and Israr Megantara, who scored twice. Iran responded with goals from Mahdi Karimi in the 18th and 38th minutes, Ahmad Abbasi, forcing extra time.
In extra time, Megantara scored for Indonesia, but Abbasi equalized for Iran, leading to penalties. Indonesia's Muhammad Nizar saved Iran's first penalty, but Mahdi Rostami saved Indonesia's fourth. Hossein Sabzi scored the decisive penalty for Iran.
The victory is Iran's 14th Asian futsal title.
Indonesia reached the final after defeating Japan 5-3 after extra time in the semi-final. Indonesia led 3-2 late before Japan equalized via a penalty from Kazuya Shimizu. Reza Gunawan and Rizki Amanda scored in extra time for the 5-3 win.
Samuel Eko scored twice for Indonesia in the semi-final, with Yogi Saputra and Firman Adriansyah also scoring. Japan goals came from Takehiro Motoishi and Shimizu.
The tournament final was held in Indonesia.
